Introducing SVdPLA’s Newest Event for the Next Generation of Volunteers
When Frédéric Ozanam founded the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, he was 20 years old. He didn’t have years of experience behind him. He just saw a need and chose to act. That is exactly why we named our newest event after him.
Frederic on Tap is a gathering designed for young people and anyone who has ever wanted to get involved in their community but didn’t know where to start. It’s built around a simple idea: that service belongs to everyone.
The Biggest Gap Isn’t Interest, It’s Awareness
One of the biggest challenges SVdPLA faces is the lack of youth and young adult involvement. But the team is quick to point out that this isn’t because young people don’t care. We interviewed Ana Gonzalez, Vincentian Services Lead Member Coordinator to learn more about what inspired the event.
“We believe this is not because there is a lack of interest,” Ana shared, “but rather because many young people simply don’t know who we are, what we do, or the opportunities available to get involved.”
A New Kind of Volunteer For a New Generation
Traditionally, volunteering with SVdPLA has meant becoming a member of a Conference, a parish-based ministry group with an ongoing commitment, but it isn’t the only way to serve.
That’s where the new Volunteer Network comes in.
“The Volunteer Network would allow anyone, regardless of religious affiliation and commitment level, to feel like they are part of the Society’s greater good,” Ana explained. “They can volunteer when they want, for as long as they want, with no commitment to be a part of a Conference.”
It is a flexible, low-barrier entry point into Vincentian service. And it opens the door to a whole new community of people who want to help.
And if you’re not sure exactly how you want to get involved? Come anyway.
Frederic on Tap is designed for people at every stage of the process, including those who have no idea where they’d fit in. The whole point is to make connection easy, to introduce people to the breadth of what SVdPLA does, and to help them find their place in it.
“We hope attendees can resonate with our mission and get involved at any level.”
