On June 19, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and honors the resilience and contributions of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history.
Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, it was not until June 19, 1865, that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free. More than two years after the proclamation was signed.
At St. Vincent de Paul Los Angeles, our work with the un-housed, thrift stores, and disaster relief programs is built on the conviction that freedom and hope should reach everyone. Not just those with resources and connections.
Why Juneteenth Matters to Our Mission
Juneteenth is a reminder that systemic gaps between what is promised and what is experienced still exist. Poverty, homelessness, lack of access to healthcare, and housing instability are not personal failures. They are the result of systems that have never fully delivered on the promise of freedom and dignity for all.
Juneteenth invites us to come together as a community to learn and celebrate the rich diversity that strengthens Los Angeles. By honoring one another’s stories and experiences, we help build a future rooted in understanding and compassion.
Celebrating and Continuing
Juneteenth is a celebration, and it is also an invitation to keep going. At SVdPLA, we are committed to that work every day of the year.
Happy Juneteenth. May we carry the spirit of this day into everything we do.
